This paan is dominated not only in the country but also abroad. Preparations are also underway to export this Magahi paan with GI tag with the help of APEDA.

However, most of the farmers of Magahi betel are surrounded by problems due to non-availability of fair price in the market. But now the days of Magahi betel growers are about to turn. They will no longer be compelled to sell betel leaves at throwaway prices. Magahi betel leaves will also be supplied abroad and the betel producing farmers will get more profit.
Magahi paan is associated with Magadha
The word Magahi is derived from Magaha, the people who speak Magadha as a local dialect. Magaha is made from Magadha and related to it is Magahi Paan. Magahi paan is famous all over the country, which is cultivated in the Magadha area of Bihar. Magahi betel is cultivated on a large scale in four districts of Magadha namely Aurangabad, Nawada, Gaya and Nalanda. In these four districts of Magadha, about 5 thousand farmer families cultivate Magahi betel. This cultivation is difficult and requires a lot of hard work.
Due to the continuous increase in the market of gutkha, the scope of betel is shrinking, the effect of which is being seen on the farmers. The cultivation of water is inherited from the family, so the farmers do not want to leave it soon and if they persist, then it is difficult to live now. The remaining difficulty increases when the betel leaves are frostbitten in the cold. In such a situation, farmers have hope for government assistance, whose expectation is now increasing.
Export with GI tag products
According to the report of PBNS, there is going to be a tie-up between Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) and Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour, located in Bhagalpur district. In this, there is a plan to export GI tag products like Makhana, Jardalu Mango, Shear Rice, Litchi along with Magahi Paan. Some quality test is required to export abroad. It can be exported only after the product is OK in the test. Obviously, the betel producing farmers will get more profit in the coming time.
Salmonella test of Magahi betel leaf is necessary
Dr SN Das, in-charge of Paan Research Center had a conversation with APEDA DGM Smidha Gupta. During this, various issues related to export of Magahi betel leaf were discussed. He said that the Salmonella test of Magahi betel leaves is necessary for exporting abroad. This test takes place in Gurgaon. It will be examined in the Fair Laboratory of Gurgaon. Magahi betel leaves can be exported abroad only after the test report comes. APEDA’s DGM Smidha Gupta has interacted with AM Exporter of Kolkata, Dr. SN Das, in-charge of Paan Research Center.
Safety certificate required
Exports to England, America, France and Arab countries AM Exporter has assured to export Magahi betel leaf to foreign countries if the test report of Magahi betel leaves is correct. The exporter has asked the Paan Research Center to come to Islampur in Nalanda to meet the Magahi betel producing farmers. After getting the safety certificate in the microbiological test, Magahi betel leaves will be exported to England, America, France and Arab countries. This will greatly benefit the Magahi betel producing farmers.
Dr. SN Das, in-charge of the center, praised the effort of Dr. RK Sohane, Vice Chancellor, Bihar Agricultural University, Sabour, for doing this work in the interest of Magahi betel growers. However, now everything depends on the microbiological test.

If the test report is correct, then export of Magahi betel leaves will start. Dr SN Das said that due to the export of Magahi betel leaves, the days of its producers will be multiplied. They will not have to take Magahi betel leaves to Banaras and sell them at throwaway prices. Farmers will get timely payment and will get more profit. At present, betel-producing farmers take Magahi paan to Banaras and sell it.
