Mrinal Sohkawai lives in Ribhui district of Meghalaya. Pig farming is common in Northeast India. For this reason, local species of pigs were being reared for fatty food in Mrinal’s too. The problem was that the growth rate and production capacity of the local breeds was very low. Perhaps this is the reason why this family did not take up pig farming commercially.
In such a situation, the North Eastern Hill Area Research Council intensified its activity in this area. It was during these activities that scientists identified the advanced breeds of piglets, Hampshire. This cough is also called in the local language. To improve pig farming, Mrinal took training at the National Research Center on Pig, Guwahati. They have their own farm, in which they are rearing pigs.
Earnings increased with the help of Kisan Pratham Project
To reduce the fodder cost, they feed homemade fodder to the animals. He has prepared a bamboo enclosure for the animals. Bamboo is easily available in the Northeast. In such a situation, it did not cost much. Mrinal also pays a lot of attention to cleanliness to keep the animals healthy.
Along with this, Mrinal also does artificial insemination. Other livestock farmers of the village also come to him for the same work and every insemination earns him an additional income of 1500 rupees. In fact, the size and growth rate of the local piglets are very low. Improved breeds of piglets are also not easily available in the local market of Meghalaya. This is the reason why the demand for advanced breeds of piglets is very high.
To meet this demand, Mrinal has converted her farm into a breeding unit. They found 8 pigs of North Eastern Hill Area Research Complex Hampshire X Cross Breed Piglets under the Farmer First project. There were four male and four female animals. From these 8 piglets, they have given birth to 101 children. He sold 85 of these children to other livestock owners and got a total income of Rs 3 lakh 42 thousand.
